Sex and the City 2: Fun and Visually Amazing

Sex and the City 2I’m not sure when they’ll stop making these movies, but I have to say, I hope that it’s not anytime soon. But let’s face facts. Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda aren’t girls anymore and only one of them is single. They’re finally grown up as much as they’ll probably ever be, and they’re still hella funny and Sex and the City 2 is a really good time.

Maybe it’s because I’m a woman that I can relate to these girls and what they go through. I never lived in NY. (Been, would never.) And I haven’t been “single” since I was 16 years old. Married my high-school sweetheart and we’re still together after 41 years, so that’s saying something. I don’t know… maybe it’s just because we’re too lazy to do anything else. But no… when it comes right down to it, we’re mates, and it’s going to last forever. Even after we shed these meat suits, I imagine.

So, Charlotte (Kristin Davis) is married to a toad (which I’m not, can’t relate there). He’s a really nice guy (can there), but well… he’s not who I’d have expected her to be with and that’s cool. Long as they’re happy but, they have a braless nanny and two kids. All are driving Charlotte absolutely nuts. And she’s guilty. I mean, come on moms… Be honest. There were times when you wanted to jump in a car and just drive away and never come back. We all have those moments, but with Charlotte… you know. She’s like waaaaay too angsty and guilty and she didn’t grow up Jewish.  She must have been Catholic. Yeah, I can relate to that.

And then, there’s Miranda (Cynthia Nixon). She loves her job and her family, but her job is pissing her off. She’s working for one of THOSE guys. You know the type. They listen to her only to a point and then, they tune out because, well… you’re female and you can’t possibly be as smart as they are. I mean, this guy even puts his hand in her face to stop her from talking. It really makes me mad when men do that, even when it’s non-verbal or physical. I have a respectable 151 IQ, and I’ll match it against any man’s I’ve ever worked with. So, I can relate to Miranda being pissed off. I’ve been dealing with that since the ’70s and well… I doubt it will change when we have idiots like Nancy Pelosi as an example of women in charge. Makes me cringe to see her.

Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker)  is even married now, and you know it’s to Big, right? Well, they’re actually perfect for one another. Both self-centered, and insecure. And Carrie’s pissed because the whole “married” thing is kicking in. No more fun. You’re married now. We stay home because that’s the place to be and well… we watch television. Bullshit, baby. If I want to go somewhere and my other half doesn’t… I go myself and have a ball.  In fact, I’ve got to the point where it’s more fun without him. So, he’s happy. I’m happy. Works all around.

But Samantha (Kim Cattrall)  I can really relate to, but only age-wise. I mean, in sexual terms, she’s like a guy. And bully for her. If a woman wants to have sex with multiple partners and makes no excuses for her likes and dislikes, well… I have to admire her confidence. I wasn’t raised that way and I didn’t raise my daughter that way, but I don’t look down on Samantha because she’s made her choices and she’s comfortable with them.

What I DO relate with Samantha to is getting older. Sam is now over 50, and she’s worried about looking old. She really, really doesn’t. She’s still gorgeous, but you can see that she’s had work done. I think that looks great for a while, and then, you have to do it over, and who wants to look like Joan Rivers? Egad! No, no Cher, Nicole Kidman, or Goldie Hawn frozen smile faces for me. Though I have to admit Goldie still looks good with makeup. Take that away and it’s a little scary.

I just figure I’ll go with what God gave me and well… it still sucks to get older. I’m working out every day in the pool and the arms and legs still want to hang like crepe paper off a doorway. I’m guessing there’s a point where it never comes back, but I’ll still be trying. Scary stuff, I tell ya.

Anyway, Samantha had a whole pill caddy with pills for everything. THAT I can totally relate to. My doctor now has me taking Omega-3, Niacin, Vitamin D, and I added in Milk Thistle for my liver, and Resveratrol because hey… if it can turn the longevity gene back on in mice, why not me? Right. I swallow so many pills now, what’s one more?

Anyway, girls are  all fed up in one way or another, when Samantha gets a chance to go to Abu Dhabi for a deal and she gets an all-expenses paid trip for the four of them wrapped into it. Wow!

The image shots of the territory are absolutely beautiful, and the girls are treated like royalty. Each has her own car, her own suite of rooms, and her own personal butler. They’re really living it up, when what should happen…

Aiden reappears.

And he’s actually NICE to Carrie. After what she did to him, I wouldn’t be speaking to her were I he. But that wouldn’t make a very good movie, and I won’t say more because then, it will ruin the movie for you.

I know that Samantha’s disregard of the local mores offended some people in the Arab community, but it was a movie, and well… Samantha can cause a ruckus no matter where she land.  Of course she creates a HUGE one. It’s hilarious to us, but some folks in the Arab community didn’t think so. That proves the illustration of the movie, though.  Our two cultures are so far different that one side with NEVER understand the other. It’s a shame, but it’s true.

Anyway, going to see Sex and the City II is totally worth the $20 (yes, matinee price with pop-corn) to go and see it, if only to visit the Middle East vicariously. I doubt I’ll see it any other way and from the beginning with the gay wedding, I laughed throughout. All in all it was $20 well spent.

I give it 5 stars for fun and relaxation alone. Enjoy!
